“The Economist” magazine recently carried a series of articles on innovations in manufacturing. The series was sub-titled “A third manufacturing revolution”. These articles give a peek at new technologies and techniques that will radically change manufacturing. Many of these techniques are already being used in production operations in existing firms. The use of these techniques is showing that components can be manufactured more quickly and economically in small quantities; at the same time using less material and less labor. These technologies require sophisticated skills and machinery that may return manufacturing prominence to the USA. I would encourage every manufacturing professional to read these articles to gain insight into the new abilities being designed into manufacturing operations.
